Judge says U.S. must return rare coins to Phila. family

This is huge!!! Remember the famous case of the ten 1933 Gold Double Eagles that the Mint confiscated? Well the family won the case and gets the coins returned!!

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/52246492.html

Quote:

A judge in Philadelphia has ruled that the federal government must return 10 extremely rare gold coins to the family of a late Center City jeweler or outline its case for keeping them in a forfeiture filing.

U.S. District Judge Legrome Davis issued the ruling Tuesday in the case of the 10 1933 "double eagle" gold coins, which experts say could fetch millions at auction. The lawyer representing the family said the coins are thought to be the most valuable gold coins in the world.

...
Think about this - prior to this ruling, there was only ONE legitimate 1933 Double Eagle ever on the market, which fetched $7.59 million at auction. Now that the pool has grown to 11, this probably killed that guys investment!!!

Well those fellows getting those BILLION US dollar bailouts can put a few bucks toward a real work-of-somewhat rarity.

But on second thought how about all the ONES held closely securely quietly in storage secretly - they may come out too!

Ain't that a kick in the head?

Before the 1933 gold coins were ready for circulation, FDR's famous gold confiscation act happened - therefore none of the 1933 $20 gold ever made it out to circulation, they were all (supposedly) melted down. The only known surviving example was one coin which was a gift to Prince Farouk of Egypt (this is the one which fetched all the millions at auction - it was thought that this was the only one in existence). Fast forward to a couple years ago - apparently a jeweler who had a contact at the mint helped smuggle 10 coins out of the mint to keep them from the melting pot, and until they were revealed through his grandkids, nobody knew they existed. The grandkids discovered the coins after the old jeweler died. To summarize, now there are only 11 official known examples of this coin, but who knows if there are any more hiding out there.

There were a LOT trading between 1933 and 1944 ish - when they made it a FEDERAL CRIME to possess one. Tee Tee :111:

Many went into bye bye land - kinda like some of my emails - and NOW they may come to light at a few million dollars per exposure.
